Director's Note

Welcome dear friends of ALMA NYC to Yellow. It is with a sincerely grateful heart that I thank you for coming to today's performance. I have served as the Founding Artistic Director at ALMA NYC over the past 8 years and it continues to be a gift to create programming and artistic work serves the communities we live in and beyond.

Yellow is a piece exploring the parallels in fragility between the human spirit and the natural world through storytelling and environmentally informed movement. We have been creating to the music of Cosmo Sheldrake whose work is created through play, nonsense, and the sonorous environment, ________. Working with both full orchestrations that mirror thriving ecosystems in tandem with delicate and quiet sounds that represent unsupported spaces have informed our movement development throughout. This alone has offered a wealth of inspiration as we dove into our complexities as humans, our diverse journey in pursuit, and our dig for joy.

It has been a true pleasure to have had a playground of incredible dancers and music to explore and create with for the first development of this story. As a company we run an incredibly collaborative rehearsal where our dancers are co-creators in all that we do, this cast in particular has been nothing short of extraordinary. All glory to them.

A special thanks goes out to our Board of Directors, Our Executive Director Josh Phan-Gruer, Director of Community Engagement Alex Bacaroni, and Company Manager Meghan Wasserman, to the company dancers, the Cosmo Sheldrake estate, Mary Sorich, Gus Callahan, Melodye Redding, Ashley Talluto, and my incredible associate Julia Kane. On a special note a hearty thank you extends to my family and incredibly patient and supportive husband to whom I bring the work home to each night after leaving the studio to unpack. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

On a final note, many of you will know that ALMA is translated to: ‘Soul, Spirit, Heart’ linguistically, it translates to our company as follows: The soul of this company are the dancers, the spirit of this company is the movement, and the heart is how we share the art. Thank you for being at the heart of our performance today.

In all things joy,

Zanza Steinberg
